Community Ambassador

Position Overview

This GSA is seeking dynamic and outgoing graduate students to join our team as Community Ambassadors. In this role, you will be responsible for fostering a sense of community among graduate students by creating content, and engaging with the community both in-person and online. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, approachable, and passionate about creating a supportive environment for their peers.

Responsibilities

Community Building

  • Getting to know the members of the graduate community

  • Implementing the GSA’s strategies to build a strong sense of community among graduate students

  • Attending GSA events (with the possibility of other Laurier graduate student specific events) both in-person (at various locations/campuses) and online to network and connect graduate students with one another

  • Fostering connections between students both in-person and online through the GSA’s Heatbeat platform

  • Act as a liaison between graduate students and the GSA by regularly communicating with students (in-person and online) to ensure they are informed about GSA programming/events, opportunities, and resources

  • Encouraging students to join Heartbeat and to attend programming/events

  • Directing students to appropriate resources as needed

  • Providing feedback on the needs of graduate students and using that information to enhance the collective experience as it relates to community building

Online Engagement in Heartbeat

  • Moderating/being a community leader within the Heartbeat community by modeling the behaviour we expect of our members

  • Welcoming new members into the community

  • Curating content for the community based on the GSA’s overarching goal of addressing the emotional burdens of graduate school

  • Facilitate discussions and create opportunities for virtual collaboration and networking

  • Encouraging students to actively participate within the online community by liking and responding to posts

  • Connecting students with similar interests

Job Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience copywriting for a targeted audience and/or writing copy that aligns with a set of brand standards an asset 

  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of graduate student life at Laurier 

  • Well-connected within the graduate student community at Laurier or a strong willingness to put yourself out there

  • Personable and can easily recognize and remember both faces and names

  • Experience managing an online community or knowledge in community building, particularly in an hybrid environment, an asset

  • Member of the Heartbeat community

  • Strong understanding of Heartbeat

  • Organized and able to effectively time manage to meet deadlines

Terms of Employment 

Start Date: May 1st, 2024 (review and renewal option at every 6 months)

Hours: Based on up to 20-25 hours per month

Compensation: $27.50/hour 

Must be a registered graduate student throughout the duration of employment.

Training:  

  • Participate in GSA onboarding and training 

  • Participate in sensitivity training  

  • Complete AODA training  

  • Complete Health and Safety training 

Work Environment 

  • Self-directed position: flexibility in determining some working hours 

  • Varying amounts of unexpected work and time demands 

  • Must be able to cope with the demands required of the position 

  • Work is at times required during weekends and evenings 

  • Work will take place primarily in a controlled office environment, but also in a variety of event locations around campus
